The future success of Battlefield will always remain a mystery

Updated: May 20, 2023

Source: Electronic Arts

When Battlefield 2042 was revealed to the world, many Battlefield players rejoiced in the fact that this seemed to be a return to formula. With the past two releases (Battlefield 5 and Battlefield 1) being set in the past, players grew tired of the era and sought change. This change was answered with Battlefield 2042 as the name implies, the year this game takes place is 2042. With amazing and beautiful trailers, promised features, and a (promised) long lasting roadmap of support for the game, players were devastated at launch.

A Failed Launch

The launch of BF2042 was dubbed the worst launch in Battlefield history. For some context Battlefield 4 also launched in a horrendous state. It suffered from both a technical and EA service side. Some problems included console freezing, rubber-banding, bad netcode, server crashing, and many other issues. Now BF2042 actually suffered from many of the same issues including the one's listed previously for BF4. Some other issues were xp progression, players were reporting that they don't earn xp at the end of their matches. In a comparison BF2042 was just as buggy as BF4 on launch and in some cases worse.

This Was Predicted

The open beta for BF2042 was launched October 6th, 2021. This beta build was a terrible first impression on the game as it suffered from many bugs. Some included ui elements, poor weapon balance, server issues, and overall poor optimization for both pc and console. Both Dice and EA tried to remedy this by saying the build of the game was "months old." (context). However, people questioned the logic behind them releasing an old build when the game is set to release only a few months later. Wouldn't they want us to experience the game that'll closely resemble it's launch?

Remain Skeptical

With this being a recent failure in the launch of flagship titles in the franchise, it's important to remember this moment as future releases get teased. Always be aware of the current gaming trend or fad as this will most likely push EA to reinterpret it into the Battlefield formula. This, as we have seen, can lead to disaster as the foundation of the games can launch a total wreck. The most important thing we can do to stop games releasing like this (especially Battlefield) is to not pre-order. Wait until the game releases and some patches are put in place as quality should be the standard for the games we buy and play.
