Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set to come out January 30th, 2024. When this game was first revealed, people were actually excited to see Rocksteady return to the DC universe. They've previously made the Batman Arkam games, with the last one releasing back in 2015. People expected this new iteration of the Suicide Squad to follow a similar approach of that story driven experience that Rocksteady is known for. We were wrong.
Live Service "Story"
First and foremost, this game's story is not some traditional open-world campaign with side missions and linear missions to engage the player. The mere fact that it's confirmed to be an "always online" looter shooter completely changes how this story is going to play out.
Yes, there is certain to be a story with plot and character arcs but what hapens after that? Can we play through it again? Will there be DLC? Is it going to be free? among these questions are a major concern for long-term support. If the game doesn't get the support it needs, does it shut downocmpletely?
The "always online" aspect of this game is going severely hurt the storytelling process. This doesn't even begin to mention the impact this has on moment-to-moment gameplay.
Looter Shooter Gameplay
As I've stated Rocksteady was previously known and renowned for their single player expereinces. Thanks to leaks and mentions of this game having a "store" and "battlepass" option in the menu, how far is this intrusive business practice going to go?
Take it from the Avangers game where bundles, loot and gear were thrown in your face every time you boot up the game. There is a chance the same will happen here. However, unlike the disappointment that was Gotham Knights and Injustice 2, it doesn't seem like these cosmetics will affect gameplay in any way. Not yet anyway.
WB Cannot Be Trusted
Yes, the game is being developed by well known and respected developers, but we are still talking about Warner Brothers after all. The same people who forced NetherRealm Studios to shell out agregious and unfinished products such as Mortal Kombat 1 and Injustice 2. All the while, there store and bundle prices were flawless in both design and execution.
Looking at a similar game, albeit a different puiblisher, the Avengers game was so scutinized and protested that it failed finaicially. Having pulled the entire game from all digital storefronts, you can no longer purchase the game. That also means there is no ongoing support for it, any bugs or glitches will forever remain.
Taking this mindset into this game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, who's to say it'll release broken and unfinished and they'll just give up on it in a few months time? Given pretty much any game released by WB, quality is no standard in their games.
I know we have yet to play it but it's something to keep in mind. Given WB's track record, do we really trust that we are even going to get a adequate gaming expereience on launch? That's up to you.
