*All Stars Racing is the best alternative for pc gamers scratching the Mario Kart itch. There are other options from Need For Speed, a Garfield Kart game and even the sequel to this game. However, *All Stars Racing is the closest thing you can get to a classic cart racer without the gimmicks and quirks of other titles offered on pc.
Gameplay
First off, the gameplay itself is very simple, for better or for worse. You have your simple drift boosting and powerups to collect in a match. There's no other systems in the game to allow you to have or start out with better "stuff" (other than specific racers). All characters offer different starting boots times when the commentator is counting down the race. For example, Big The Cat's boost activates when holding down the drive button two seconds before you start. Also, all characters come with their own stats. With Big The Cat as another example, he's a rather heavy and slow character which can make his standard speed slow but he can't be bumped around too much. The gameplay is a standard Mario Kart clone as you would expect and if you are familiar with Mario Kart then you should have no problem getting use to this gameplay.
Modes
There are a total of four single player modes. That being, Gran Prix, Single Race, Time Trial, and Missions. Grand Prix is just like any other arcade racing game with multiple matches and maps that either boost or drop you ranking. By the end, you either win the gold cup for that specific Grand Prix or either silver or bronze. Winning grants you the most Sega Miles (more on that later). The single race allows you to pick whatever character/level you want to race on that you have unlocked. The Time Trial is technically a match with no time limit against yourself and your fellow ghost racer (your fastest lap on that track). The missions is where some real variety come in as there are a total of 64 to complete. You unlock the next missions with the total stars you have unlocked in a single playthrough of the previous mission. They are easy but still offer a ton of variety in game modes and specific tasks to complete. Some are boss battles, elimination, and holding your drifts.
Maps
There are a total of 24 maps to unlock with your Sega Miles. There are alternate routes/layouts for each track. The maps also take inspiration from the IP associated with SEGA (along with characters). For example, there's the track on the 'Curien Mansion' with it's alternate in the sewers titled 'Sewer Scrapes.' There is a ton of variety and you can get all the maps pretty quickly. I managed to get everything unlocked in the game, minus the music all in around 10 hours of gameplay.
Overall
The game is very fun albeit simple and offers the best classic alternative to Mario Kart for pc. If you love the arcade racing genre for those barebones mechanics and stick around for the SEGA IPs, you will love this game. The standard price is also $9.99 so it's a steal on the Steam store (on sale the game can also be as low as $2.99).
The commentator is also funny.
Samba de Janeiro!
