Mortal Kombat fatigue; the ever-changing roster

Updated: May 10, 2023

On May 1st, Netherealm studios released a video on the official Mortal Kombat YouTube channel. The video was in celebration of MK's 30th anniversary. (Here). Many have theorized that this potentially teases the inevitable Mortal Kombat 12 that's supposedly set to release this year. This is quite the exciting news if this turns out to be true. However, there is something about the release of new Mortal Kombat game that has bothered me. The changing roster.

What if I told you that your favorite character may not return in the next iteration of Mortal Kombat? Or that they will return but you have to buy them as DLC? This is the inevitable question (for me) when it comes to Mortal Kombat 12. Especially since Mortal Kombat 11 was released only four years ago and is still a very solid game with a diverse cast of characters. Perhaps the second most diverse cast in the franchise, of course behind Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Mortal Kombat 11 has welcomed a total of 37 playable characters. With the bulk of them available in the base game, that being 25 of them, there was a character for everyone. However, for as many characters that they brought back and included in the game's entire run, there were still some niche favorites that were left behind. This included Goro, Fera & Tor, Quan Chi, Shinnok, Nitara, Ashra, and Ermac just to name a few.

The Mortal Kombat franchise is no stranger is changing up the cast every release. Playing devils advocate, it does give some chance that some long forgotten characters may return (I'm looking at you Mokap). There is no clear answer as it's not a smart business move (or is it practical) to include every character that ever released or is going to release into one Mortal Kombat game.

Looking at the bigger picture, this is a small gripe and one that ultimately doesn't matter. We still have yet to see anything like the cover art, concepts, or even gameplay. So, everything is still speculation as to what MK12 could bring to the table. Although, this is still something to keep in mind on who you are going to main in the game. Obviously, every character plays a little differently and we don't we don't even know if it'll use the same engine as MK11 (it will most likely).

I'm willing to accept the fact that I probably won't get the chance to play as my favorite character or I may have to buy them as DLC. So long as we get some answers on what the game is going to look like and how it's going to play.

In my opinion, if the game is anything like Mortal Kombat 11, I'll be there for it.
