The Burning Shores DLC picks up right where the main game left off. In a way, this DLC serves as a bridge to the inevitable Horizon 3 that Guerrilla Games are probably working on now. This article will cover everything new in the DLC and some fan feedback on where it takes the story.
New Stuff
Unfortunately, the only substantial new thing in this DLC is a single new wild enemy type (the Bilegut). The DLC doesn't really use any new story beets or game mechanics that you haven't already seen playing the main game. There are new outfits to craft using a new resource (examples) but even that serves no narrative point in the story.
The new wild enemy type is at least a welcome addition. Even though you would fight it like any other enemy in the main game.
An Exclusive DLC
There is also bad news for PS4 players. If you own the base game on a PS4, you won't be allowed to purchase or play this DLC. This is weird as the base Forbidden West game is on PS4. The new area may be the cause of this as it's pretty expansive with massive draw distances.
Lackluster plot points and ending (according to fans)
(Spoilers) Fans have been rather vocal on their disappointment with the narrative and the direction it takes. Specifically, there's a new character (Seyka) that is introduced and shakes up the dynamic of Aloy for seeming no reason other than plot. Some reviews have made it pretty clear that Aloy was a perfectly fine character and forcing her into a relationship was not the way to go.

People have also gone as far as to review bomb this game on Metacritic. This has caused Metacritic to release a statement vowing to keep a closer eye on user reviews.
