The first AAA game to sell at an exclusive price of $70 was NBA2K21 on it's release of August 2020. Since then, other publishers have followed in the same footsteps, mostly when it comes to the current generation of consoles and in some cases PC. The most prominent followers were Sony and Activision with Activision's release of Modern Warfare II. Modern Warfare II sold for a base price of $70 and it's safe to assume their supposed "premium" COD release for this year will be the same. On the other hand, there have been some slow adapters of this as Nintendo have only ever published their first $70 game, that being Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom.
History of Sega Prices
The history of Sega games and their prices were no mystery and were some of the most notorious prices. Back in the 1990s, the average Sega Genesis game costed anywhere from $49.99 to $59.99. Now, adjusting for inflation, some sources have calculated that paying for these game full-price in the 90s would be paying over $100 in today's economy. (Source).
However, back then, the premium price for games were still only around $60 at that time. Nowadays, with the increase of most modern-console video games, we are seeing inflation rates skyrocket yet again.
The latest Sega game that is rumored to be priced at $70 is another Yakuza game titled 'Like a Dragon 8.' It's also rumored that if Sega was to do a sequel to Sonic Frontiers then it too would be a standard $70.
Who's Next
Sega have yet to reveal if this $70 price tag is going to become standard or just a case-by-case basis. Nevertheless, it should be no surprise that Sega is even looking into increasing the price tag of their games. The question everyone should be asking is, who's next?
